Corrected mean calculation for metrics in Solutions*
Files
Issue
Previously, the computation of average metrics across voyage plans in the Solutions*
files was performed using arithmetic means. This approach treated each edge equally, regardless of how long the vessel sailed on it, potentially leading to inaccurate representations of voyage-wide performance.
Fix
We have updated the metric aggregation logic to use weighted means, where each edge’s contribution is weighted by its sailing time. This change ensures that longer segments of the voyage have proportionally greater influence on the computed average metrics, leading to more accurate and meaningful results.
Impact
This fix improves the consistency and accuracy of reported metrics. As a result, some metrics reported in prior analyses may differ from those computed under the corrected method. Integral metrics of the marine voyage (length, duration, total CO2 emissions) are not impacted.
A detailed review and description of the impact of this fix on all previously published results and analyses will follow. From now on we will refer as Aritmetic mean the output produced up to v5 and Weighted mean the one produced using v6.
