Welcome to VISIR-2 User Documentation

VISIR-2 is a numerical model realized by the CMCC Foundation. It is designed for calculating optimal ship tracks. It serves the purpose of identifying the most efficient routes in relation to environmental factors such as the sea state, the sea currents, or the winds. Presently, the optimization objective can be voyage length, duration, or overall CO2 emissions. Time and emissions savings are evaluated with respect to the least-distance route. The numerical scheme relies on a dynamic graph-search method. The model was validated, and its computational performance is quasi-linear.

This documentation is intended to support users in the installation and first execution of VISIR-2 code. It encompasses installation instructions, a description of the suite’s structure, and guidance for operating the software. It also provides some additional information for customisations and further development. For the initial setup, we recommend focusing on Usage section of this documentation.

VISIR-2 python source code is open and publicly available as a zenodo repository

There’s also a video tutorial that explains how to perform a quick run

The current model version is released under a GPL v.3 license.

For more information about the model, please refer to the Publications section.
